Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(uplifting music) - [Kanah] Today we're doing an event called "Know Your Numbers".
(uplifting music) - The "Know Your Numbers" is kind of a slogan that we came up with because we wanted to introduce this new concept called intrinsic capacity.
It is the sum of a person's physical and mental capabilities.
It entails five domains and it's cognition, mobility, vitality, sensory, and psychological.
- So we are screening those areas, and if someone screens positive with them, we can give them some tools to try to address those issues.
- At the top of the list is the cognition.
And so, with that one, it's just a brief memory test.
We ask someone to repeat three words, and then we do a distractor.
So we ask 'em what the month is, what the day of the week is, and then we go back and ask if they remember those three words.
And so that's an example of cognition.
For mobility, we have people do a chair-stand test.
So we have them sit in their chair like this, with their arms across their chest, and we have them stand up as many times as they can in 14 seconds.
So that's how we test that.
Some of the other ones are just yes/no questions.
Are you having any problems with your vision, any problems with your hearing, any weight loss?
Things like that.
And then we also go over with 'em these pillars of prevention, because if people engage in these activities, primarily physical activity, exercise, they can really turn that around.
(uplifting music) - I think the one thing I want people to walk away from this event today is that you can make a small change that could have a huge impact down the road for your health.
So if we can do one small thing today, one small change, the impact on that is going to be significant.
And I think, specifically, physical activity is something that, if we can really be physically active in our middle years and really build that endurance up, that's going to give you so much protection and benefit as you age.
