Right now, it's still a young concept.
A lot of people haven't heard of it.
A lot of medical providers haven't heard of it.
It is the sum of a person's physical and mental capabilities.
It's comprised of five domains, cognition, mobility, vitality, sensory, and psychological.
Those are the areas where as people age, where we begin to see changes.
It's focused on prevention.
It's shifting that paradigm from a disease model waiting for problems to occur and then treating them and thinking ahead and preventing them from developing in the first place.
The pillars of prevention, we have four of those that we focus on and kind of think of it as BERN.
The B stands for behavior, and what we're looking for that is encouraging people to do things on a regular basis that brings them pleasure.
With E, stands for exercise, at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity every week.
So the R stands for relaxation, and with that one, we're talking about mind-body health.
And then N is nutrition, and with nutrition, there's some real basics, of course, eating more fruits and vegetables for sure but avoiding sugar.
You know, the older that you are, you're more likely to think, "I know I need to be doing this, but I'm not sure that I have time to really turn things around."
But I can say this.
It doesn't matter how old someone is.
They can improve their health.
