(bright upbeat beats) - I am detective Nina Hummel with the Knox County Sheriff's Office Family Crimes Unit.
I knew that I wanted to do domestic violence in general, growing up, I was involved in a domestic violence home and it led me to be very passionate about victims involved in domestic violence.
(bright upbeat beats) Elder abuse often falls under that, because the suspect is generally a family member whether it be husband, wife, child, grandchild it's very often they have that familial connection, so it's not strangers.
It's quite literally their loved ones.
(bright upbeat beats) These are very complicated, complex situations, these are people that you've raised and you're not alone.
We work to navigate those muddy waters every day.
We do our best to make sure that you are taken care of as a victim, if they've want to have their person that has victimized them around, we can work with that, but there's gonna be stipulations in place to make sure that they're not victimized again.
(upbeat beats) If they don't wanna prosecuted sometimes, we can't get around that, but we can listen to how they would like to see the prosecution happen.
Maybe the suspect has fallen on drug abuse.
Maybe the suspect needs mental health help and by prosecuting them, we can court order mandate that to happen.
Justice for elder abuse victims comes in a lot of different forms, it's not always prosecution.
We have all of these resources such as CREVAA, we can catch them up, we can make sure that they can be taken care of.
With the growth of elder abuse victims in our community, I want people to first and foremost report it.
Whether it be the victim or somebody that knows something about what's going on and report it, so that we can get you out of a bad situation.
If I don't know about it, I can't help.
(bright upbeat beats)
