Aging Matters.
- I'm the Director of the East Tennessee Area Agency on Aging and Disability, part of the Tennessee Human Resource Agency, About 25 years ago, we realized elder abuse was an issue we needed to address, not just in this region, but around the state.
So we started an Elder Justice Coalition, drawing together law enforcement, district attorneys, everybody you could think of that was dealing with this issue.
Three years ago, we were asked if we would start the CREVAA, which is Collaborative Response to Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse, and it was just a natural fit for us.
- CREVAA's approach to elder abuse intervention is trauma-informed, client-centered approaches to help those clients recover from victimization.
And what we do is we disrupt services around that person, offer them support to try to help them recover from that crime, short-term and long-term.
We may refer for in-home services, again, home delivered meals, just anything that would get somebody in there to support them on a regular basis.
- We were a pilot program, about six months after we started, the state started expanding the CREVAA program around the state, district by district.
What we've discovered is that when we have that kind of team approach, we solve real problems for folks who are being abused.
And what we have learned is we can say to older adults, we're here for you.
