And one of the ways is that it's the habits and the things that we do in our life and that we maintain so that we can have fulfilling opportunities as we age.
What we do know from research is that people that have a more positive attitude around aging and have that really quite early in life before they get to be older adults tend to live seven and a half years longer than those who are less optimistic about aging.
So really how we think about it and how we are socialized to it can make a big difference just in our longevity and also in the quality of the life that we have as well.
And we know that people that are more optimistic tend to have 11 to 15% longer lifespan and are more likely to live to age 85 and beyond.
- Hi, there.
- Where is Maria?
- [Participant] How you doing?
- I'm doing well.
How about you?
- [Participant] I can't complain.
- So it is about getting out.
Sitting in your home is not gonna be a good way to age.
And we know that because of what we know around loneliness and isolation.
It's not good cognitively, it's not good for us physically, and it certainly isn't good for us for longevity purposes.
So, you know, going to a senior center, you know, and engaging with people there and they have lots of activities that they do.
It's not just staying at the senior center, but being with a group of people who then can go out and experience new things.
But you know, in your church or whatever your faith community is those are opportunities as well to engage with different generations and show what you can do as an older adult.
Volunteering is another beautiful way to be out in public so people can see what we are doing.
And playing in sports leagues.
You know, they have pickleball leagues.
(soft music) You can be inspirational to people when you get out there and you show them what we can do.
And it doesn't have to be what we do with our body.
It can be what we do with our mind and our ideas and our creativity can also be appreciated as well.
(paint sploshes) It's never too early to start preparing ourselves.
Every day, we are getting older.
Every day we are aging.
It's something to aspire to.
