Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(gentle music) - Ageism is rampant, but it's worse for women.
Roughly a third of older adults report hearing negative comments because of their age at work and workplace discrimination impacts women in many ways.
- In country music, it was like, oh yeah, if you're a guy, you run your stuff through the shower, put on a tank top and a hat and walk on stage, you know?
If you're a woman, there's a whole other thing you gotta think about.
I decided young that I wanted the full aging process, like I wanted to own every inch of it.
I wanted to wrestle with the parts that were hard.
I wanted to own the parts that were good, and I wanted to live all of my life.
I mean, no Botox, no fillers, no facelifts, no nothing.
And every once in a while, in a certain light I'm like, "Well, maybe I have some regrets about that."
(laughs) The only thing that's hard for me is that I could be sitting beside somebody who's my age who doesn't look my age, and so I'm gonna look older and that niggles me sometimes.
But my commitment to the way I've decided to live my life is like this big, and that's this big.
- The one thing that we do know about ageism is that it's modifiable.
Through consciousness raising and through connections, encounters between people of different ages, negative stereotypes about aging are challenged and people are really seen for who they are.
We need to create communities that allow for people of different ages to connect.
And so, we can think about how can we use public or communal space to create community?
How can we leverage arts and culture and parks and public transportation to create a community that works for everyone and that promotes connection between people of different generations?
