Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: I brought a sword that's been hanging on the wall of my old family cottage.
And I found a reference to an old writing desk that we have that said that Captain Simmons, who's the name on there, brought it from Japan.
APPRAISER: It's a very nice... with the exception of the broken scabbard, 1852 naval officer sword.
Of the nine Simmons who were in the Navy in the American Civil War, there was one who was commissioned an officer, and that was a William Simmons from Kennebunk, Maine.
Who was commissioned in February of 1864 as an ensign, which is your lowest level of being an officer in the U.S.
Navy.
So Captain, not so much, but he definitely did his service.
Retail on this would be between $1,200 and $1,500.
GUEST: Hm, great.
Wow.
