Help kids build writing skills by having them write instructions for caring for their pet.
Asking kids to put together instructions for taking care of the family pet is a fun way for them to practice reading and writing. It also reminds them about the responsibility of owning a pet. They can work together to write down what their pet needs when the family is away. This task helps children learn to organize ideas and learning to write well helps them become better readers.

I do it.
Asking the boys to put together instructions for taking care of our dog is a fun way for them to practice reading and writing.
And it also reminds them about the responsibilities of owning a pet.
They work together and write down what our dog needs while we are away.
I'll remind them of a step, if they've forgotten something about Gracie Belle's routine.
What's our first thing we should do for Gracie?
- [Child] Put water in the bowl.
- [Mom] Put water in a bowl.
Why don't you write that?
It's a fundamental way in which children learn to organize ideas and learning to write well helps kids become better readers.
Should she go play with Emmy?
- [Children] Yes.
- [Mom] Go play with a friend?
When the boys see me making lists or leaving notes it allows them to see reading and writing used in everyday life.
Having the boys make a to-do list for Gracie-Belle also helps me get ready for vacation.
