Learn how to help kids distinguish real life from fiction.
Kids can be confused by what they see in movies, especially when realistic visuals blur the lines between reality and fiction. In this heartwarming bedtime story, a dad comforts his son after a spooky movie and helps him understand how special effects and animation create pretend worlds. It's a friendly reminder to guide your kids through media literacy and encourage thoughtful discussions.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(gentle music) - Dad.
I saw a movie at Tommy's house yesterday with ghosts in it.
I know cartoons aren't real, but this one had real humans in it.
And the ghosts seem real too.
Are ghosts real?
- Well, not everything in movies is real, son.
Most of it's just pretend.
They use computers to make those images and videos of the things that don't exist.
- I guess you're right, dad.
(yawning) Good night.
- Good night, son.
(gentle music continues) - Sometimes it's hard to tell what's real on TV.
Talk to your kids about reality versus fiction.
For instance, this is all just animation.
I can't really talk.
