Scrapbooking is a fun family activity that can help build literacy skills.
A family scrapbook is a great way to jump-start your child’s writing. Use a photo album to keep souvenirs – photos, ticket stubs, etc. – of things you do together. Have your kids write a description of the event and add a date. Ask them what words they would use to describe the event. Discussions around these memories can expand vocabulary while creating something tangible to preserve memories.

As a nana to 16 amazing grandchildren, and as a former teacher who has a passion for reading, I'm always looking for creative ways to work on literacy.
Making a scrapbook is a fun activity we all can enjoy together.
My grandkids range in age and reading level, but that's a really good thing.
Cut it the way you want to.
The kids pick out photos or ticket stubs or programs they save.
Sometimes, they choose to draw in their scrapbooks.
I ask them to write a description and date it.
This happened on May 20th.
My older grandchildren will help with words and correct spelling.
- Okay.
T. - Okay, let's see if you need to work through this.
Scrapbooks allow for reflections too.
I asked my grandkids what they liked and what they learned.
What words will they use now to describe an event?
It always sparks special conversation to look back at memories and share them with others.
