My name is Dr. Sands, I'm the Medical Director for Nashville Healthcare Center at Bordeaux.
On today's For Your Good Health, I have tips on how you can live healthy with diabetes.
(gentle upbeat music) Diabetes is when your body has difficulty unlocking its potential to use sugar as energy.
(gentle upbeat music) Symptoms of severe high sugar would be feeling very dry, very dry mouth.
Also, if you're short of breath or feeling your heart rate beat really fast, and weakness.
Things that you can do immediately is to increase your water intake and definitely you wanna avoid things that will add to a higher blood sugar level.
(gentle upbeat music) On the other side if your blood sugar drops too low, you might get headaches, you might get shaky, sweaty, very hungry.
Your body is trying to tell you to respond and you want to react by getting your blood sugar higher very quickly.
(gentle upbeat music) When the sugar builds up in the blood cells, your eyes can get blurry, and you can develop retinopathy where the blood vessels in the back of the eye change and that can lead to blindness if not corrected.
(gentle upbeat music) Foot care is very important because you want to prevent ulcers, you want to prevent injuries.
And remember, diabetes makes it hard for your body to respond and heal.
Staying active is very important.
It helps the lower your sugar and it also improves insulin resistance, and that's we recommend that you're exercising by walking perhaps at least 30 to 45 minutes three or more days a week.
It's very important that patients pay attention to their sleep habits.
If you're waking up, it could be that your body's giving you signs that your sugar is too low or too high.
It's very manageable and you can reach your goals.
Many people are doing it and living well and thriving.
This is a very good time to live with diabetes because we have good medicines, we have good programs and guidelines and so everyone with diabetes should be encouraged.
My recommendation is to work with your provider on your care plan and to stay motivated and stay positive.
