Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipThe film touches on a really core need of all human beings, which is to feel connected and a sense of belonging.
There are over 2 million Americans that identify as adoptees, which means over 100 million Americans have an adoptee in their immediate family.
Although the story focuses on a Korean adoptee who grew up in the Netherlands, I think the emotional core of what she goes through struggling to find her identity and her place in the world is universal to all adoptees.
It was really important to me to platform an original mother or birth mother's voice because I think we so rarely hear from her in the mainstream narrative.
Never before had I considered that birth parents could be searching for us as well.
I think all the narratives that I've seen are about adoptees searching, and it almost has a a silent implication that they wouldn't look for us, perhaps, or aren't interested in that.
I really hope that viewers can walk away with a new view of what reunion can mean for all sides, as well as a more humanized, realistic portrait of what original mothers and original families are thinking, feeling, and experiencing.
