In 1865, Tennessee was the first Confederate state to officially ratify the fourteenth amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted former slaves rights as full citizens. However, Tennessee was also the last state to ratify the fifteenth amendment, which prohibited state and federal governments from denying a citizen the right to vote based on “race, color or previous condition of servitude.”
African Americans gained from the Civil War was the right to free expression.
