Ida B. Wells was born a slave in 1862 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. She came of age during Reconstruction, was educated and became a school teacher in Memphis, Tennessee. While teaching, Wells began writing under a pen name for literary and religious publications. By age 27, she made headlines herself -- suing a railroad company for discriminatory seating.
